 Driver Training

The HSV Owners Club organises several different types of driver training events throughout the year to cater for a range of skill levels and interests.

Skid Pan Driver Training

These training sessions are usually held at the Eastern Creek Raceway and are targeted at improving basic driving skills by enabling the driver to understand how their car reacts when loss of adhesion occurs. Quite often this only occurs on the road and in emergency situations, and that is too late to work out how to avoid loss of vehicle control.

These courses are highly recommended for young drivers who have yet to experience these emergency conditions as well as drivers who have bought a new car and want to understand how it handles these conditions and practice how to maintain vehicle control.

The driver is accompanied by an instructor who is able to provide expert feedback to the driver throughout a range of professionally designed practical sessions.

Drivers often find the prospect of driving in loss of adhesion conditions daunting, but on the day discover that it can also be fun!

It's a great day, and well worth the price to gain a level of peace of mind that you better know how to react when loss of adhesion occurs and what to do to maintain control and avoid an accident.

Competition Skills Driver Training

Competition Skills Driver Training Days are designed for all Club members, their families and friends to learn or further hone their driving skills on a race track. (If you liked the Skid Pan, you will love the race track!)

Tuition will be provided by experienced Club Supersprinters as well as a number of guest racing drivers, some of whom have driven on famous racetracks overseas.

The format for the day is as follows:

  • Arrive at the track and proceed to the "garage" area. Empty vehicles of loose objects, spare wheel, etc and report to the Event Secretary for processing.
  • A CAMS licence is required, and one can be issued for the day for those who don't have one.
  • You will be given a scrutineering sheet which you will then place under your wind shield wiper and line up with your vehicle in the scrutineering queue.
  • The event organiser will then hold a briefing session covering an introduction to the training team, safety, and an overview of the day - which includes lunch.
  • Cars are placed into groups, and one group only is allowed on the track at one time. The driver is accompanied by an instructor for every track session.
  • The training usually finishes around 4:00pm where drivers are debriefed and Certificates of participation are presented.

Participants will need to bring:

  • HSV Owner Club membership card
  • Level 2S CAMS licence (or purchase one on the day)
  • Motor vehicle prepared with clean brake fluid, brake pads and tyres in good condition, tyres inflated to 40psi cold (for Commodores - others use maximum pressure on tyre placard).
  • Comfortable long sleeved shirt, long pants and running shoes. All clothing and footwear must be non-synthetic.
  • A full face helmet complying to AS/NZS1698.

Participants vehicles will also need some prior preparation, including:

  • CAMS approved fire extinguisher mounted in reach of the driver whilst wearing a seat belt.
  • A blue triangle of at least 150mm x 150mm in size on the external bodywork showing the location of the vehicles battery
  • All forward facing glass (ie headlights, driving lights etc) is to be covered by a protective film so that pieces of glass cannot fall on the track if the light is broken.
